KUCHING: Four strategic gas hubs in Miri, Samalaju, Bintulu and Kuching will play a central role in the Sarawak Gas Roadmap (SGR), acting as key energy distribution points and enablers of industrial development, attracting investment and driving economic growth across Sarawak.
Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said the Roadmap includes several key gas infrastructure projects that are either ongoing or in the pipeline, such as the 500MW Miri Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Power Plant, the Samalaju Pipeline project, the Gas to Bintulu project and the Kuching Low-Carbon Hub.
“Each of these projects represents a significant step forward in realising Sarawak’s vision of becoming a regional energy hub.
“Each of these infrastructure project strengthens Sarawak’s low-carbon ecosystem while ensuring Sarawakians benefit directly from our natural resources, paving the way for a sustainable and inclusive future.
“My Ministry remains committed to facilitating the safe and timely development of these critical infrastructure projects. In addition, we are dedicated to creating a business-friendly environment that fosters investor confidence, enabling meaning participation in Sarawak’s energy transition journey,” he said.
He said this during the Sarawak Gas Roadmap Summit 2024 officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg here Monday (Nov 25).
He said through the Roadmap, Sarawak is positioned to attract substantial investment opportunities, which will not only fuel economic growth but also generate high-quality jobs across the entire value chain.
“The SGR reflects the visionary leadership of our Premier, a blueprint to transform our natural gas resources into engines of economic growth while ensuring that economic progress is balanced with environmental responsibility,” he said.
He added that together with Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros), efforts are continuing to manage natural resources sustainably, investing in the development, expansion and maintenance of critical gas infrastructure and network across Sarawak.
“The Sarawak Gas Roadmap and Kuching LowCarbon Hub signal a transformative era for Sarawak as they showcase our readiness to lead in low-carbon solutions, aligning with global demands for cleaner energy while addressing Sarawak’s unique goals and aspirations.
“Together, we are laying the groundwork for a sustainable and resilient energy future that benefits not only Sarawak, but also our wider region.
“By developing critical infrastructure, creating job opportunities and fostering industrial growth, we bring Sarawak closer to realising its vision of a thriving low-carbon economy,” he said.
