SIBU: The Sessions Court here sentenced four persons, including a woman, to 10 years behind bars for committing gang robbery today (Dec 2) .

Judge Marutin Pagan meted out the sentence on the four accused after the court found them guilty of the offence as charged following a full trial.

In addition, Marutin also ordered the male accused namely; Wat Rantai, 38, Liong Sin Ho, 34, and Vincent Engan Galun, 24, except Aishad Humaira Abdullah, 35, who is a woman, to be given eight strokes of whipping.

They were jointly charged with committing gang robbery on Kendawang Lepang, 53, by robbing one Oppo brand cellphone at a hotel room in Jalan Sentral on Feb 12 last year at around 10.15pm.

The offence was framed under Section 395 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and liable to whipping, upon conviction.

In meting out the sentence on the accused, Marutin pointed out he considered the evidence of how the offence was committed, the mitigation and public interest.

The prosecution was handled by deputy public prosecutor Harvind Raja Gopal who called five witnesses to testify in the trial whereas the accused who were all unrepresented called six defence witnesses.
