MIRI: Two semi-detached houses at Taman Gilbert, Jalan Sim Chong Chat, went up in flames today (Dec 7), leaving four tenants with nothing but clothes on their backs.

Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported among the tenants who managed to evacuate to safety in the 9.30 am incident.

A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firemen from Miri and Lopeng stations were dispatched to the scene after receiving an emergency call.

On arrival, they confirmed that the first house inhabited by an elderly woman was completely destroyed while the second house occupied by two men and a woman, was 70 per cent damaged.

The team had to use water from a nearby fire hydrant to bring the flames under control at 9.42 am.

After ensuring that the situation was safe, the whole operation concluded at 12.05 pm.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred are still under investigation.
