SIBU: Sibu recorded four longhouse fire cases involving a total of 101 doors and as well as RM5 million losses in properties this year alone.
Sarawak Fire Department Zone 4 (Sibu) chief Janggan Muling explained that longhouse fire cases had involved a total loss of RM5,826,500
However, properties worth RM2,353,500 has been successfully rescued.
He added that of the four cases, two were reported here (in Sibu) while one each (was reported) in Kanowit and Bintangor districts.
“Last year, we have recorded eight cases of longhouse fires involving 100 doors in this division with property losses amounting to RM3,781,350.
“Firefighters managed to save properties worth RM1,649,650,” he said when contacted.
Asked on what is the main cause of such incident, he linked it to cooking activities in general.
He stated that fewer longhouse fire cases were reported this year as compared to last year and it showed better awareness among the residents on fire safety.
“Almost every week, our station holds awareness talks and demonstrations on the dangers of fire in longhouses,” he added.
Janggan advised the public to always be vigilant and careful with the use of electrical appliances in the longhouse as well as be cautious when cooking.
“Those who are busy in the kitchen should not leave their cooking’s unattended,” he said.
