SIBU: Four timber lorry drivers were fined for transporting excess loads along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman here, yesterday (Mar 19).

The lorries, intercepted during a cargo vehicle operation patrol, were allegedly exceeding the permitted load limits stipulated under the Carrier Licence issued by the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP).

Sibu Road Transport Department (JPJ) branch chief Mohamad Faizal David Jemat  said the lorries were directed to Sibu JPJ for weighing to ascertain the total weight of the cargo being transported.

“Results found that the overload percentage ranged between 59.05 and 86.90 per cent of the permitted limit.

“All four drivers were issued summonses for failing to comply with the conditions outlined in the Carrier’s Licence under Section 19(1)(b)(vi) of the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Act (ALPKP) 1987.

“They committed an offence under Section 19(3) of the same Act, which carries a fine of up to RM10,000, or imprisonment up to one year, or both, upon conviction,” he said.

The department stressed that it is taking a serious stance against lorries carrying loads exceeding the permitted limit, as they pose a threat not only to road users’ safety but also cause damages to the roads.

He reiterated that such operation to detect lorries transporting excessive and hazardous  will be conducted from time to time.

In light of this, all lorry operators are advised to collectively shoulder responsibility by refraining from carrying excessive loads to prevent damage to roads and ensure the safety of all road users.
