SIBU: A 26-year-old man was yesterday ordered by the Sessions Court to be imprisoned for four years for robbing a woman of RM600.

In passing the sentence, Sessions Court Judge Marutin Pagan also directed that Mohd Khairul Azmi from Kpg Hilir be given two strokes of whipping.

Khairul understood the nature of the charge read and explained to him the consequences of entering his guilty plea.

He was charged with committing robbery of a 58-year-old woman of RM600 by putting her in fear of instant injury by pointing a wood saw blade against her at a house in Jalan Delta on Feb 16 at about 4 am.

The offence falls under Section 392 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of up to 14 years and whipping as well if convicted.

In outlining the fact of the case, Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Rex Heng Yi Min told the court that on Feb 16 at about 4 am, the victim (complainant) was awakened from her sleep by noises in the living room.

As soon as she went out to check, she was surprised to see an unknown person who warned her not to move by pointing a wood saw blade at her.

While the suspect was searching in the living room, the complainant stopped him and a struggle between them ensued until the complainant fell and suffered injuries.

Following the incident, the complainant lodged a police report.

Acting on information received on the same day at about 9.55 am, a team of police arrested the accused at his house in Kampung Hilir.

Police investigation revealed that on Feb 16 at about 4 am, the complainant woke up from sleep and heard the sound of movement in the living room of the house.

The complainant got up from bed and opened her room’s door, only to be shocked to see the accused standing in front of her room in black attire.

The accused asked her to sit quietly on the bed and not to move while pointing a saw blade at her as a warning.

While in the complainant’s bedroom, the accused took two bags containing cash and other items.

The accused then proceeded to rummage in the living room but was stopped by the complainant from doing so.

A struggle then erupted between them whereby the complainant was pushed by the accused, who then fell and knocked her head against the corner of the table which resulted in injury.

After that, the accused fled the house.

Marutin ordered that the unrepresented accused, to serve the sentence with effect from his arrest.
