BINTULU: The fourth MARA Junior Science College (MRSM) school in Sarawak, is expected to be fully constructed by the end of this year.
The construction of the school here began in 2018 and was supposed to be completed last year but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, its construction was delayed.
Petronas Group Human Resource Management Senior Vice President Farehana Hanapiah said the school was now targeted to be completed by the third quarter of the year.
“The project is currently at 70 per cent completion and once it is complete, the school is expected to be handed over to the Sarawak government and Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) for operations by end of this year.
“That is when MRSM will come in and make sure that it (the school) is fit for students,” she said to reporters after a site walkabout at the school this morning.
In addition, she pointed out that the school which will be able to accommodate about 450 students, will start its student intake in the second quarter of next year.
Among the facilities provided are student hostels, student center, multi-purpose hall, pavilion, resource center, dining hall and ancillary building.
The construction of MRSM Bintulu is a collaborative effort of Petronas, Sarawak government (via Yayasan Sarawak) and Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA).
It will be the fourth school for the state, with existing MRSMs already built in Kuching, Betong and Mukah.
During the site walkabout, Farehana was accompanied by Petronas Human Capital Investment Head Syed Mohamad Muhafiz Syed Bakar, Petronas Sarawak general manager Zulaihi Mantali, Sarawak Immigration Department director Datuk Ken Leben and Yayasan Sarawak director Mersal Abang Rosli.
