KUCHING: A motorist had a lucky escape when a huge tree fell on his car in a freak accident during heavy downpour and strong wind yesterday.

The motorist was driving along Jalan Hui Sing towards Mile 3 bazaar at 2.40pm when theincident happened.

The driver said he was worried when caught in a traffic jam caused by the heavy downpour when suddenly, there was a loud bang and tree branches and leaves were covering his car windscreen.

Despite the heavy rain, he quickly got out of the car which was badly damaged by the fallen tree.

Officials from the Fire and Rescue Department were quickly deployed to clear the debris caused by the fallen tree. Police were also at the scene to divert traffic flow.

Meanwhile, two more vehicles, this time at Mile 7, were damaged when a tree fell on them because of strong winds.

Padawan Municipal Council enforcement team came to clear the trees at 3pm, freeing a Toyota Hilux and a Viva, which were parked just outside Kota Sentosa Town Square.

The light truck was slightly damaged, but the Viva took the brunt of the fallen tree when the trunk came crashing down on it and very nearly

flattening it. Both the vehicle owners were not in the car when the tree fell.
