KUCHING: PAMSC is continuing the Public Design Lecture Series made possible with sponsorship from Nippon Paint.
The second of four lectures will take place today at 6.00 p.m. at the PPKS Auditorium, opposite the Giant Hyper- market.
Our sponsor, Nippon Paint have had a long track record of nurturing design in Malaysia and the region, especially with their Asia Young Designer Award (AYDA). One of the winners of this award will be speaking at today’s lecture – Mr. Rien Tan Kwon Chong is a graduate architect and a part-time travel blogger.
He will talk about his experiences through some of his competition entries.
The second speaker is from Kuching; Ar. Tay Buan Chuan will talk about the imaginative and innovative solutions to conventional design problems carried out by his “micro-practice”.
He has a very hands-on approach to work, with multiple roles; designer, architect, draughtsman, illustrator, office boy, clerk, etc.
Tay thinks that it is important to be true to oneself, be happy while being responsible to our client, the environment and the community.
Our keynote speaker comes from a long way; Dr. Milinda Prathiraja is a Sri Lankan architect and a senior lecturer at Moratuwa University.
His community library at Ambepussa inspired by his University of Melbourne doctorate thesis won the Global Holcim Silver Award for Sustainable Construction in 2015.
He believes in a hands-on, collaborative and inter- disciplinary mode of education – something which he puts to practice in his library building.
The construction of this library was carried out with the support of the army, teaching young soldiers about building techniques and skills through its construction process. And through this process, help to re-integrate ex-soldiers into post-war Sri Lankan community.
The lecture is free for everyone, they are requested to register on-line as there are limited seats.
