KUCHING: A local man escaped the gallows after his plea was accepted by the Court of Appeal on Monday (Mar 22).

A panel of judges led by Datuk Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah, Datuk Ravinthran Paramaguru and Datuk Gunalan Muniandy, unanimously allowed the appeal to be filed by Regoanal Awing @ Rickynold Igai, who is now 50 years old.

Regoanal, who is a lorry inspector, was sentenced to death by hanging after being found guilty of distributing methamphetamine, weighing 801.4 grammes on April 27, 2017.

He was found guilty under Section 39B (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

On Monday, the court unanimously allowed the appeal to be filed through his lawyer, Fung Lee Fook.

The court decided to change the sentence to 18 years of imprisonment after transferring the charge to Section 39A (1) of the same Act.
