KUCHING: The excitement and atmosphere of the Sarawak Day 2023 feels like one is living in the 1960s.
That was certainly what the participants from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development made everyone feel, nostalgic.
They decided to go retro all the way and don attires from the 1960s at the Sarawak Day 2023 parade at Padang Merdeka here tomorrow (July 22).
New Sarawak Tribune interviewed them after the full-dress rehearsal yesterday to get their responses regarding this weekend’s Sarawak Day celebration.
Sylvester Ogang, 42 said he and his colleagues were given the task to wear clothes with a 1960s theme, and to look the part, it feels really good to put them on Sarawak Day.
“We did our research as to what people in the 60s wore so on Sarawak Day we could wear them and feel and look the part,” he said.
Inspired by the late Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe, Suljirina Lucas, 39, said they will be dancing to a ‘Malam Pesta Muda Mudi’ song by Saloma.
“When we saw the music, we tried to follow the dresses and attires worn during the time. I am happy to be able to freely dress uniformly this way. It’s the first time on Sarawak Day we could do so,” she said.
Howard Fadd, 44, who is the head of the contingent said he is very excited to be dancing on Sarawak Day as his costume is taken from the 60s era.
“This fashion is a 60s theme, which looks like a person who would go dancing very often in the club, and because of that I am excited to dance,” he said happily.
Another member from the Ministry, Muhd Hazwan Abdul Khalik, 37, expressed his excitement on the big day as he expects more people to turn up on Sarawak Day.
“Today’s rehearsal saw so many people, imagine on the actual day, there would be more people. I can’t wait,” he expressed.
