KUCHING: The Sarawak Heart Foundation, chaired by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, will lead fundraising efforts to acquire equipment for establishing a Satellite Heart Centre in Bintulu.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Hian said this during a press conference following the 8th Asia Pacific Public Health Conference to emphasise the government’s commitment to improving healthcare accessibility and infrastructure.
“Bintulu Hospital is set to become a satellite hub, with immediate upgrades planned for its facilities. I’ve already written to the Minister of Health (MoH) seeking permission to commence these enhancements.
“The Premier’s support has been pivotal, with promises to purchase equipment and support the hospital in becoming a cardiac service provider,” he said.
To build a satellite centre, Dr. Sim added, two key elements are needed, namely, equipment and manpower.
The Sarawak Heart Centre has confirmed that it will support Bintulu Hospital with the required personnel. This strategic move aims to ensure Bintulu is well-equipped and staffed to handle advanced cardiac services.
He also reiterated the necessity of federal government support for these initiatives.
“If the federal government agrees with us, we will upgrade the facilities in Bintulu straight away. The collaboration between state and federal entities is crucial for the swift and effective implementation of these projects,”he said.
“Meanwhile, in Sibu, efforts are underway to install a cardiac MRI machine. The machine is currently in Singapore, awaiting the completion of MRI room upgrades at Sibu Hospital.
“The Sarawak Heart Foundation has sponsored these upgrades, and once complete, the new facility will enhance diagnostic capabilities, allowing patients to receive comprehensive cardiac care locally,” he said.
He said that the Sarawak Public Works Department (PWD) has also been appointed as the project manager to expedite the process of establishing the Sarawak Cancer Hospital.
At the moment, detailed specifications and needs are being provided by specialists from Sarawak General Hospital to ensure the cancer hospital is adequately equipped to handle specialised treatment.
