SIBU: A 52-year-old man is in police custody for allegedly injuring his future son-in-law with a machete over a debt.

Sibu police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said the man, who admitted to wounding his daughter’s boyfriend with a machete, was arrested yesterday morning.

Stanley said in the 6.25pm incident on Wednesday, a 31-year-old complainant, the future son-in-law, went to the 52-year-old man’s house in Jalan Pahlwan here. The complainant was accompanied by his 28-year-old girlfriend, who is the suspect’s daughter.

“The complainant went to meet the girlfriend’s father to discuss the RM30,000 which the suspect had borrowed from him in 2017.”

ACP Stanley said when the complainant and his girlfriend entered the house, the suspect who was reportedly angry, showed up with a machete.

“He swung the machete at the complainant, wounding him on his left hand. After that the suspect fled,” Stanley said. The whole incident was witnessed by the suspect’s daughter.

The suspect was arrested at 4am yesterday at a coffeeshop in Jalan Long Bridge. “He admitted to injuring the complainant and had thrown the machete into the river near Lanang Bridge,” he added.

The case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon.
