KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here sentenced a jobless man to six months in jail for stealing a gas cylinder from a bungalow in Taman Budaya.
The accused Osman, 35, from Kampung Rampangi, pleaded guilty to a charge before Magistrate Zaiton Anuar.
According to the charges, he committed a theft of a gas cylinder at a residential building of a victim in Taman Budaya around 5.30 pm on Feb 21.
Therefore, the accused was prosecuted under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and can be fined, if convicted.
Zaiton ordered the accused to serve his sentence effective from the date of his arrest on Feb 23.
According to the facts of the case, the mother of the male complainant realised that the gas cylinder was lost and allegedly stolen by someone.
The complainant’s stepfather checked the CCTV footage and found that an unknown man had stolen the gas cylinder.
On Feb 23, around 6.30 pm, the complainant saw a man acting suspiciously in front of his gate and apprehended the accused.
CCTV footage examinations found that the suspicious looking man was the same person who stole his mother’s gas cylinder.
The complainant then alerted the police for help and handed over the accused for further investigation.
Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang prosecuted the case while the accused was not represented by a counsel.
