Bomba’s swift action thwarts further damage to area

MIRI: Swift response from Miri Fire Station (Bomba) on Tuesday night managed to contain a fire caused by leaking underground gas pipe from doing bigger damage. A team of seven firemen from Bomba Miri with one fire engine were immediately despatched to the scene at Interhill Park Jalan Sze Chuan in response to an emergency alert on the incident at 7.39pm.

According to sources, small explosions were heard, followed by fires during the incident. Fortunately no untoward incident was reported occurred. The operation ended at 8.41pm. It was not immediately known what the actual cause of the leakage was as investigation by Bomba was underway.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated case, a 30-year-old businessman was surprised to find that the gold nuggets that he bought last September from a man were fake gold. This was revealed after the man went to a gold shop in Bintulu to identify the gold nuggets’ purity before being informed by the gold shop owner that the gold nuggets were fake items.

According to a source, in the last September incident, the victim while in Sandakan was contacted by a man who said he wanted to sell pure gold nuggets of 999 type weighing 300 grams to him. “The man offered a price of RM8,000 and the victim agreed leading the man to subsequently send the item to the victim’s worker in Bintulu and paid in cash.

“After returning from Sandakan, the victim went to a gold shop to identify the gold’s purity and was surprised when being informed that the gold nuggets were fake items,” the source said. The victim tried to contact the man but unfortunately failed to reach him until today, he added. “As such the victim lodged a police report at the Miri Central Police Station, yesterday for further action,” said the source.
