KUCHING: Sarawak is the biggest natural gas producer in the country with 52.89 trillion standard cubic feet (TSCF) with 52.7 per cent of the country reserves in 2017.
According to Assistant Minister for Corporate Affairs Abdullah Saidol, the country’s reserves were estimated to provide up to 15 to 17 years of yearly output or 5,000 standard cubic meter everyday.
“The oil and gas in Sarawak are based on the reserves to production ratio, and that is why it is important for Sarawak, through Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros), to enforce its authority and protect Sarawak’s interest in the oil and gas industry,” he said.
He said this in reply to a question from Sadong Jaya state assemblyman Aidel Lariwoo regarding natural gas reserves and Petros yesterday.
Abdullah noted that the state’s income from petroleum and gas were about RM3bil to RM4bil and it was the state government’s aspiration to maintain the 20 per cent royalty and dividend.
“Sarawak is the biggest contributor through its gas reserves from the world-standard plant in Bintulu, MLNG and Shell MDS,” he said.
He also pointed out that in order to increase the state’s participation in the industry and also income, Petros has been given the mandate by state government to play its role as main regulator and active player in Petroleum Sharing Contract (PSC) in Sarawak.
“Petros will strengthen the monitoring of gas resources through Integrated Network Strategy, in order to balance the production supply with post-production, and also targeted income,” he said.
