SIBURAN: The Gawai Carnival 2024 at Kampung Masaan here aimed to instil the festival’s tradition in the younger generation, ensuring that cherished customs continue to thrive, says Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.
The Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, highlighted the event’s success in not only celebrating Gawai traditions but also providing invaluable opportunities for education, skill-building and community empowerment.
“This carnival is a testament to the resilience and vibrancy of our Dayak heritage,” he said during his closing speech for the event here last night (Jun 9).
Reflecting on the standout moments from the carnival, Sagah commended the various events and activities such as the Pertandingan Dayung Sangon and Dari Pogan, organised by the Dayak Bidayuh National Association’s (DBNA) Women Branch, adding that it offers a platform for participants to showcase their inner strength and confidence.
“Led by Alloysius Kuyong and his team from DBNA Penrissen, traditional Bidayuh games like blowpipe competition, slingshot competition, and ‘kaki hantu’ were showcased, highlighting cultural roots and promoting teamwork and unity among the Bidayuh community.
“The culinary delights at the Food Fair, facilitated by the Serian Agriculture Department and Serian District Council also showcased flavours that narrate the story of the Dayak culture and traditions.
“Handicrafts and traditional costumes were displayed and sold at the event, captivating attendees and emphasising the craftsmanship and skill inherent in the community,” he added.
He also expressed pride in the educational initiatives undertaken at the Education Fair and Talks, hoping they would ignite a thirst for learning among the youth.
Furthermore, Sagah also lauded the upskilling workshops held, stating that it provided opportunities for community members to enhance their skills and build brighter futures.
The Dari Pogan was won by 26-year-old Samson Kidau Derandidi Desson from Kampung Sudoh Singai, Bau. While the Dayong Sangon was won by 22-year-old Joanna Eve Presley from Kampung Simpok, Padawan.
