KUCHING: The Gawai Carnival Redeems 2024 (GCR24) is set to be a major cultural event, taking place from July 26 to 28, with the highlight being the gala dinner on July 27, graced by the Premier of Sarawak.

Redeems president Datuk Peter Nansian Ngusie said the 16th edition of the carnival will feature a diverse three-day programme filled with cultural activities, performances and competitions.

He also shared plans to elevate the carnival to an international level by proposing the World Tribal Festival for next year. This initiative aims to bring together tribes from around the world to Sarawak, promoting both local and global cultures, and boosting the tourism industry.

“The carnival will include a beauty pageant, traditional Gawai rituals, and performances by local and visiting groups. A ladies dancing group from Sabah will also perform, adding to the event’s cultural diversity.

“Food stalls, craft stalls and various other vendors will be available throughout the carnival, ensuring a vibrant atmosphere. The event promises a high-standard event with modern LED systems and well-organised facilities,” he said during a press conference held at the Borneo Tribal Village office today (July 17).

He went on to emphasise the importance of community involvement and support from the Sarawak government, expressing gratitude for the Premier’s continuous support.

He also mentioned ongoing efforts to upgrade facilities at the Redeems Centre to accommodate larger events and international guests in the future.

“The GCR24 is expected to attract around 10,000 attendees, with activities spanning from traditional Gawai rituals to modern competitions and performances, making it a significant event for both locals and tourists,” Nansian added.
