KUCHING: As with many other festivals, Gawai Dayak has the capacity to unify diverse communities in Sarawak, said Association of Churches Sarawak chairman the Right Reverend Datuk Donald Jute.

According to him, Gawai is an opportune time to give thanks for the manifold blessings of the past harvest year and to seek God’s blessings and favour in the year ahead.

“May it continue to be so in order that interethnic and interreligious unity, harmony, and understanding are further nurtured and advanced.

“For the Dayaks, may the gathering, be it in church, in the rumah panjai, kampong, or in the cities, strengthen familial, filial, and communal relationships,” he said in a statement.

At the same time, the Bishop of Kuching (Sarawak and Brunei Darussalam) encouraged all fellow citizens to join the Dayaks in celebrating their Gawai in order to appreciate their rich and beautiful cultures as well as recognise their contributions towards nation-building.

“The Dayaks will be honoured to welcome all and sundry to join their open house, which is now back after the COVID-19 pandemic,” he added.
