KUCHING: The 2024 Gawai Dayak Parade is more than just a festivity; it is a vibrant representation of the Dayak community in Sarawak.

The parade not only showcases traditional dances, music, and attire but also emphasises the importance of preserving and promoting Dayak culture for future generations.

Participants from various Dayak subgroups, including Bidayuh, Iban, and Orang Ulu, as well as other communities, came together to celebrate in a display of solidarity and mutual respect.

New Sarawak Tribune took the opportunity to speak to participants about their experiences and the significance of this event.

I am immensely happy to be able to participate in this event. This event is about the spirit of unity of the Dayak community. We live in peace and harmony, so that is why we are here. Every year we will follow this celebration, and we are committed to supporting whatever the state’s effort in celebrating the Dayak community.

As an Iban, I proudly wore our traditional ngepan Iban attire today. This is my first time participating in the parade, having recently become active in community activities. It is a new and exciting experience for me. Despite the rain, our spirits remained high, and we, the people of Sarawak, persevered until the end. I’m thrilled that everyone did so well.

Today’s experience was quite challenging due to the rain. However, I am very happy because everyone’s enthusiasm was contagious. This event showcased why Sarawak is rich in culture. Besides the Iban, there were also Bidayuh, Kenyah, Balau, and other groups represented. Witnessing the beauty of the traditional attire and the vibrant atmosphere firsthand was truly captivating.

As this is my second year joining the parade, and this year I am leading my contingent, Dayak Bidayuh National Association Bung Sadung Branch, I feel very excited and a tad nervous. I am happy because I can learn more about my culture and celebrate together with my community.
