KUCHING: First-time voters here have spent their public holidays to vote for the very first time.
Denedy Wong, 27, who works as an Auditor, flew in from Kuala Lumpur to exercise his rights, voting for his candidate of choice for the first time.
He later shared that during the previous election, he was still studying in the UK. But upon returning to Malaysia, Wong now seeks to fulfil his responsibility to the nation.
Another first time voter, Tristan Ng Yung Liang, 22, a Personal Banker, said it was a tough decision for him to decide on who to vote for.
However, he is sure that his vote matters in deciding what is best for the country.
“I feel that there will be great changes to our community in Sarawak.
“It was a tough decision and I had to do some research of which party I had to choose,” he told New Sarawak Tribune at the voting centre in SJK(C) Stampin in Jalan Kempas this morning (Nov 19).
Samuel Huang Ki Wen, 22, who is a fresh graduate from Swinburne University and a first time voter said that when he already knew who to vote for upon arriving at the voting centre.
“The young people should know about politics so they would know which party to vote for and actually take action,” he added.
There were many young voters who came out and took the public holiday as an opportunity to vote for the very first time.
The large number of first time voters was made possible because of the UNDI18 implementation last year.
The Bill was passed in parliament and the amended Article 47(b) and Article 119(1)(a) of the Federal Constitution has now taken place.
