SIBU: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is confident of wrestling back the Selangau parliamentary seat following the positive response and support from the people in the area.
According to Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang, although a few potential candidates have been identified, the decision ultimately rests with the party leaders.
“We don’t have candidates for Selangau yet, but we have two to three potential candidates who are currently walking on the ground (meeting with the people).
“The decision will be made by the party leaders, and Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will then confirm it. He will pick the following candidate,” he said when met by reporters after officiating the closing ceremony of the Dayak Think Tank Association Sarawak (DTTAS) Education Fair 2022 here yesterday.
On the 15th General Election (GE15), he said it will be held anytime soon, and that GPS is more than ready for it.
“GE15 is getting nearer. For the Selangau Parliament constituency, we are prepared. In fact, we have been ready since the last state election.
“We have already made our moves. Our party machinery has been moving quietly to explain the policies of the state and federal governments,” he stressed.
Gira also noted that people can already tell which governments are trustworthy and which are merely good at keeping their promises.
“The GPS government is currently one that genuinely aids the people and is not aligned with any political group in Malaya.
“We are the Sarawak people’s party under GPS. Any decision is made by the state government, not the Malaya (federal) government.
“So far, the response of the people in the parliament constituency (towards us) is very encouraging,” he pointed out.
In the last parliamentary election, Baru Bian of Parti Keadilan Rakyat defeated Rita Insol of Barisan Nasional by a slim majority of 486 votes.
Baru won the seat after polling 11,228 votes against Rita, who garnered 10,742 votes.
