KUCHING: Gedong will soon have its own district council building, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

According to him, plans to construct the building are still in discussion with State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohd Abu Bakar Marzuki.

He pointed out that as district councils are one of the important branches of government, they need to be provided with budgets and basic facilities of their own.

“With the existence of the building, the councillors in Gedong and its sub-committee members will have their own office and space for them to discuss the infrastructure and the administration of the district.

“Meaning, the district will be able to hasten its development that we want to implement,” he said during the swearing-in ceremony of Gedong District Council councillors at Hikmah Exchange on Monday.

He said if a district wants to be developed as a smart district, there is a need to adapt to the new era which uses information technology (IT).

As such, Abang Johari emphasised that council members need to use applications to communicate with one another to discuss and address any problems that arise in the village or district.

“With this method, we will be able to solve people’s problems faster. This is what we call smart partnership.”

Aside from that, he also stressed that district councils statewide must focus on the overall development of their area and strengthen the bond between them and the rakyat.
