SAMARAHAN: Gegar TAZ Carnival is being held in efforts to foster ties between the College Representative Council and students of Tun Ahmad Zaidi College, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas).
Gegar TAZ Carnival vice director Danny Pek Eng Leong said, “Personally as a student, there is this perception where students have this gap between the students and the College Representative Council (JPK).
“Students also face problems and we as members of the JPK are there to support them. But it is difficult when the students don’t approach us. Their voices cannot be heard if complaints are not made.
“So this event aims to foster ties among the students and the committee members as well as giving ourselves the opportunity to gain leadership experience and to encourage sportsmanship among students,” Danny, who is also a second-year Business Economics student, told New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.
“Of the 30 booths in the bazaar, seven are owned by Unimas students themselves. We are also glad that we are able to provide an opportunity for them to gain exposure in doing business,” he added.
Gegar TAZ Carnival is the third annual event since it was reintroduced in 2017. It is being held at Tun Ahmad Zaidi college in Unimas from Feb 17 to 24.
Compared to events held before Gegar Taz Carnival was introduced, this event covers a wider range of aspects.
Apart from cultural competitions such as dance, singing, and drama competitions, this event also offers mentally and physically challenging competitions such as debate, e-sports, marathons and motivational talks.
Preparations for the carnival started since November last year with the recruitment of students from Unimas Tun Ahmad Zaidi college.
The opening ceremony was officiated at by Institute of Borneo Studies director Prof Dr Shahren Ahmad Zaidi Adruce at Tun Ahmad Zaidi college on Feb 17.
A Master’s degree student Muhd Hafizuddin Ramli, 24, a former JPK member said the event featured many interesting activities for students.
He said: “There are academic activities like debates and talks. They also have e-sports for gamers and of course, cultural competitions like singing, drama and dances for those who enjoy this kind of entertainment.
“I believe it will be a successful event because they have also invited popular social media singers who have a number of fans in Unimas.”
Meanwhile, two HRD students Lim Yi Wei and Gan Bei Ying said they are very thankful for the event because it is an opportunity for them taste different types of food.
“We usually have the same food in the campus. Thanks to the bazaar at this event, we have access to different types of food,” Lim said.
Gan added: “Based on the activities planned, I also think this event will help the students to gain more ideas on future jobs after graduation.”
