MIRI: The Miri Scout District has appointed Deputy Minister in the Premier of Sarawak’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala as president of Miri Scout Council.
Among those at the ceremony on Saturday (Aug 27) were Sarawak Scout chief commissioner Capt Zainuddin Tan Sri Hamdan Sirat, Sarawak Scout Council chairman Peter Choy Mui Seng—representing president Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom—and Miri Scout Council chairperson Caroline Siburat.
Gerawat said Miri Scout District needed to grow its membership by helping leaders at the cub pack and troop levels.
“Membership is important as it reflects the strength of our organisation. It also reflects the big role scouting can play in the development of youths.
“The scout movement has noble objectives, which include character building through experiential learning, for example learning good values and principles and interacting with people and the community through various activities and programmes,” he pointed out.
“Scouting is still very relevant today, especially for young people, to grow into individuals with strong principles and good moral values to become useful members of the community.”
At the event, Miri Scout Council also received monetary contributions from Gerawat and Choy.
