KUCHING: The Sarawak government is in the process of implementing the vaccination programme for those aged 12 to 17 years old.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said those in that age group comprised 289,200 individuals – 9.94 percent of the state’s population.
“The government hopes that parents can give their full cooperation to the authorities to facilitate and ensure a smooth implementation of the vaccination programme when the time comes,” he said during the state-level National Day 2021 celebration at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex here, tonight.
The vaccination programme, he said, would be under the supervision of the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MoH) and the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).
Abang Johari said that as of Aug 30, the vaccination programme in Sarawak had reached the rate of 91.0 percent or 1,879, 360 out of the 2,066,000 eligible aged 18 and above had received the first dose of the vaccine.
“For the second dose, a total of 1,821,499 or 88.2 percent of individuals aged 18 were vaccinated,” he said.
He said although the infection rate was high, especially for the southern zone, there was some relief because recently, 99 percent of infections were classified as Category 1 and 2 meaning they had no symptoms or suffered mild symptoms only.
“With that, I urge the people to continue to adhere to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) that have been set so that the number of daily infections can be reduced as soon as possible.
“I believe that with the two vaccine doses that we have received and adherence to the SOPs, we will be safer,” the chief minister said.
Also present were Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mamud and his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Ragad Kurdi Taib, and Tourism, Arts, Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who is also the minister-in-charge for the state-level National Day 2021 celebration, as well as state Cabinet ministers.
