KUCHING: Schools in Sarawak have been told to prepare for flash floods.
Deputy director of (School Management Sector) Sarawak State Education Department Omar Mahli said that in the event of floods, the first step is to inform parents of the students.
“The next step is to prepare a safe place for the students to take shelter while waiting for the floods to subside,” he said.
He assured that the department will communicate with related parties to assist the affected schools.
“But at the moment, we are very thankful that even though the weather is not exactly on our side these past few days, we have not heard of schools being closed due to the flash floods,” he said when met by reporters after inspecting the situation of the first day of the 2023/2024 academic session at Sekolah Kebangsaan Petra Jaya here today.
Meanwhile, on the lack of facilities at the SMK Mukah hostel, Mahli said he was made to understand there were no proper furnitures and proper mattresses and pillows for the students.
However, he said the school has taken the necessary measures to resolve the issue.
Earlier, a video went viral on social media showing one of the rooms in the school without proper furnitures, pillows, mattresses and even proper beds.
