KUCHING: Time is running out for unlicensed food businesses operating under the jurisdiction of the Kuching North City Hall (DBKU).
Mayor Hilmy Othman said the local authority has come to know that there are 166 food operators operating without a licence within its jurisdiction.
A total of 386 are licensed food operators, he said, stressing the need for the others to do likewise.
“This is to ensure that the food and beverage they sell to customers comply with the rules and regulations of DBKU.
“The issue of public health is our major concern, and we want to continue to safeguard it, plus it is for their own good,” he said.
Hilmy said this to reporters after officiating at the World Toilet Day 2023 Seminar here on Tuesday (Dec 5).
“We know who they are because we have a list of 166 food operators that are not licensed under our jurisdiction. They might have their own reasons as to why they did not apply for the licence but we are willing to hear from them.
“That being said, DBKU is giving them a chance, up until March 2024 to apply for the licence.
“If they do not apply for it, we have no choice but to take stern action against them as we have reminded them gently for a very long time,” he added.
Hilmy stated that the permit and licence fee is very minimal at RM100 per year.
“Only things that matter are proper and complete documents and within three days to one week, the permit is approved, so it is not difficult to apply for it.
“They just need to come directly to DBKU’s office, present their complete document, pay for the licence fee and they would be good to go once it is approved by us,” he added.
