Enforcers all out to stop sale of Ghost Smoke candies in the state
KUCHING: Ghost Smoke candies?
If you are not in the know, they are candies that look like cigarettes and emit smoke-like vapour when sucked.
The authorities don’t take lightly to these candies following complaints from concerned citizens of a video that went viral on the social media showing a primary school pupil sucking a Ghost Smoke candy.
Yesterday, 60 premises in the state were checked by the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry Sarawak (KPDNHEP) for Ghost Smoke candies.
However, only one premises at Jalan Datuk Tawi Sli here was found to be selling the candies.
“We have seized 14 boxes containing 24 packets of ‘Ghost Smoke’ candies worth RM110 from the shop,” said KPDNHEP deputy director Mohd Hanizam Kechik.
He said the case would be further investigated under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011.
On the video that went viral, Hanizam said parents and netizens alike became worried.
“The video shows underage children imitating the act of smoking.
“Without doubt, Ghost Smoke candies can encourage children to take up smoking when they are adults.”
“The ministry would like to advise traders in Sarawak not to sell these candies which have bad influence on our young.
“The ministry also welcomes the general public’s concerns on this issue so that KPDNHEP can do its job fast and effectively,” he said.
