KUCHING: Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang is a suitable choice to be fielded as candidate for the Selangau parliamentary seat, views Dayak Think Tank Association Sarawak (DTTAS) advisor Willie Henry Majang.
He said Gira’s willingness to bear more responsibilities should be viewed positively by the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition.
“GPS currently needs a new dynamic political narrative featuring a young candidate of authority, calibre and charisma like Gira as Selangau MP,” he said in a statement today.
He said Gira’s exploits in the last Sarawak State Election where he won with an overwhelming majority also lends credence to why the latter should be fielded.
“This proves that his authority does not need to be disputed anymore to reclaim the Selangau parliamentary seat. Apart from that, Gira is known in his area for his character that is close to the people, and his humble nature.
“We believe the leadership of the GPS led by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will make wise decisions and this is the best basis for the people to continue the development agenda and defend the rights of Sarawak,” he said.
Yesterday, the Tamin assemblyman said he is ready to be fielded by Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and GPS to reclaim the Selangau parliamentary seat.
“But it is up to the people and the top leadership of the party. This will be a very heavy task … but if the party leadership believes in my ability to reclaim the Selangau seat from the Opposition, I am ready to take up the challenge,” he told a local daily.
In the last general election, Selangau was won by incumbent Baru Bian who contested on a Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) ticket. He defeated PRS candidate for the seat, Rita Sarimah Insol by a thin majority of 486 votes.
