KUCHING: The Government of Canada in partnership with Girls Not Brides is hosting a photo exhibition entitled Girls’ Voices: Speaking Out Against Child Marriage from today to Sunday 12 March at The Spring Shopping Mall from 10.00am to 10.00pm.
High Commissioner for Canada in Malaysia Judith St. George will be hosting the launching today at 2.30pm at North Court of The Spring.
“Child, early and forced marriage is a violation of human rights and hinders development. We believe the protection of women and girls in society is essential for peaceful, prosperous and stable countries.
“Together with our global partner Girls Not Brides, we are proud to bring this exhibition to Sarawak and encourage the public to visit. Girls Not Brides is a global partnership of over 550 civil society organisations in more than 70 countries, committed to ending child marriage,” said St. George.
The keynote address at the launch will be delivered by Minister of Welfare, Women, and Community Wellbeing Datuk Hajah Fatimah Abdullah.
Child marriage affects 15 million girls a year worldwide. Girls’ Voices shares the untold stories of girls forced into or at risk of child marriage, and the leaders, families and community members advocating for change alongside them.
It features stories from girls, boys, women and men, as well as religious and traditional leaders from countries in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
Girls’ Voices: Speaking Up Against Child Marriage, which was initially launched in Kuala Lumpur last year with the support of the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, is open to the public.
