SARAWAK is well-positioned to become a global leader in Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) technology, said Datuk Ibrahim Baki (GPS-Satok).

Ibrahim said the state has potential to reduce carbon emissions and create economic opportunities through CCUS.

“Sarawak has an estimated 30 trillion cubic metres of carbon storage capacity in the seabed of its continental shelf. With our location, outside the Ring of Fire, and the availability of depleted oil wells and saline aquifers, we are uniquely positioned to play a major role in CCUS,” he said in his debate speech on the Natural Resources and Environment Bill, 2024 during the second meeting of the third session of the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today (Nov 12).

He added that the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) will be the regulatory authority for CCUS activities in Sarawak, ensuring they are conducted to the highest safety and environmental standards.

“A robust regulatory framework is crucial for the advancement of CCUS in Sarawak. This Bill empowers the NREB to provide guidelines for environmental preservation during CCUS and forest carbon licence activities,” he added.
