KUCHING: Cooperative members have been urged to venture into unexplored fields such as renewable energy.

Member of the Board of Directors of the Co-operative Institute of Malaysia (CIM) Datuk Willie Mongin said the country has abundant resources and potential business opportunities in agriculture and product marketing.

He pointed out that continuous improvement in knowledge and exposure for all cooperative members is important, encouraging them to stay abreast of new technologies.

“I observe that many of our cooperatives have significant potential, with some even paying remarkably high dividends. However, the number of successful and active cooperatives is surprisingly low.

“Therefore, I urge and challenge those considering establishing a cooperative, and if there are existing but inactive cooperatives, please activate them.

“Seek a white knight or a business venture that can revitalise the cooperative, enabling it to generate income,” he said when officiating at the On-site Outreach Programme Towards Popularising Cooperatives (MASKOP) 2024 Zone Sarawak programme here today (Jan 31).

Willie who is Puncak Borneo MP also stressed the importance of gaining exposure to innovative leadership strategies and adopting fresh, more strategic approaches to conducting business.

He said the country has a climate that allows for various activities throughout the year, unlike Western countries with a short summer season for outdoor work.

However, he noted that Western countries have highly lucrative businesses compared to local enterprises.

Towards this end, he said local cooperatives can compete with other states and even countries with more strategic measures.

“Their business approach in the West differs in terms of our mindset, work culture, and how we utilise technology.

“Only by adopting innovative and strategic business practices can we compete not only within our industry but also on a regional, national, and global scale to enhance our competitiveness.

“We need an attitude that aligns with our aspirations. Success can be achieved through our efforts and mindset,” he added.

On the same note, he lauded the programme organised by CIM, saying it helped to enhance public understanding of the role of cooperatives in developing the community and the nation’s economy.

“This programme can promote the advantages and uniqueness of cooperatives to the public, as well as disseminate the services and products offered by agencies under the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry.

“So, we (CIM) must play a role in activating activities and cooperative businesses so that they can contribute to our society and country,” he added.

Also present was CIM deputy director Mohd Zaib Mat Yunus.
