SERIAN: Modern agriculture supported by increasingly sophisticated technological developments has great economic potential.

Beting Maro assemblyman Razaili Gapor said young people who are gadget- and tech-savvy should be daring enough and take the plunge.

“That’s why we brought 40 Beting Maro residents on a study tour here (Borneo Empurau Farm and Resort Sdn. Bhd., Tarat) and Pengkalan Kuap Figs, Grapevine, and Sungei Marong Agri-Farm Company in Kota Samarahan.

“They can see for themselves and learn farming methods with the concept of fertigation, aquaponics and hydroponics in addition to many other things learned, including cocopeat processing and good farm management.

“We are aware that modern (technological) agriculture nowadays attracts more young people to get involved in agriculture, which has a wide economic potential to be explored,” he said.

He was commenting on the Beting Maro Agropreneur Study Tour Series headed by PBB Beting Maro Youth chief Awang Nashfarini Awang Sarbini. The tour ended last Sunday.

Razaili stressed that he wants to see more young people in Beting Maro become proficient in agriculture by using modern methods.

Meanwhile, Nashfarini described the study tour as a very important platform by taking a closer look at how agricultural systems in terms of fertigation, aquaponics, and hydroponics work.

“In addition, our people can identify the types of crops that have high potential and high demand.

“I would like to see the youths in Beting Maro, in particular, to succeed in modern agriculture, and even in agro-tourism in the future,” he said.

Asked about the significance of the location selected for the visit, he said the three locations have been successful in the modern agricultural system and have proven to be able to produce a lot of products.

Nashfarini said each farm visited has its agritourism attractions such as resorts, restaurants, and fish ponds within the farm area.
