SIBU:  A total of 1,346 cartons of contraband cigarettes worth over RM323,000 were seized in an operation conducted by the 10th Battalion General Operation Force (GOF) here on Wednesday.

Deputy commander, Supt Fredial Nyambong said GOF personnel raided a house in Jalan Temedak where they found the items kept in a room.

“Our men waited but nobody showed up to claim the items which we later seized,” he said.

Frediel believed that the items were kept there temporarily before being sold to the public through middlemen.

The case is being investigated under Section 135 (1)(d) of the Custom Act 1967.

He said as of November 28 this year, the force had seized a total of RM9 million worth of smuggled goods which included contraband cigarettes, liquor and fireworks.

“These were from a total of 54 operations conducted where 45 were successful,” he said.

From these raids, a total of 88 persons were arrested.

“In 2018, we managed to seize goods worth RM4.2 million and RM2.3 million in 2017. We have a bigger seizure this year as we have intensified our efforts against smuggling activities,” he said.
