KUCHING: The Sarawak General Operations Force (GOF) confiscated illicit goods worth RM48.85 million during seizures conducted between January and December 25, this year.
State police commissioner Datuk Ramli Din said there were 141 cases compared with 88 cases during the same period last year which netted RM 13.3 million worth of illicit goods (cigarettes, alcohol, timber and machinery) seized.
“These seizures include offences under the Supply Act, of those who failed to pay taxes on goods and wildlife,” he told a press conference following his work visit to the GOF headquarters in Batu Kawah here yesterday.
He added that a total of 316 people including 100 locals were arrested in connection with the seizures.
Meanwhile, on border security along the 2,000km Sarawak-Kalimantan border, Ramli said the force is assessing the matter from various aspects, following the announcement of the Indonesian government to shift its capital to East Kalimantan from Jakarta by 2024.
He added smuggling will be among the issues that need to be tackled and assured that the police would refine efforts to tackle the problem.
