KUCHING: The success of planting Golden Melon through the fertigation system at Rampangi Permanent Food Production Park has put Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas on cloud nine.

“I came here to witness the first harvest which was grown using the fertigation system, a precision farming.

“The harvest has amounted to 1,500 Golden Melons or about two tons from one greenhouse shed. After several trials, we finally obtained a very good crop and harvest.

“This is indeed an achievement which augurs well for the future of precision farming — the path in which the state agricultural system is pursuing and advocating,” he said here yesterday.

Uggah, who is also the Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development Minister, added that the Internet of Things (IoT) also played its part in the successful cultivation of Golden Melon.

Meanwhile, Fabian Ng Eng Hieng of Lotus Farm Agritech, who manages the cultivation, revealed that he used the stingless bees (Kelulut) to help in the pollination.

“The Golden Melon is known for its natural sweetness and has no pesticide residue.”

The production park, he added, was also the anchor farm for fertigation and hydroponic systems in the state.

During the visit, Uggah also presented the ‘MyGap’ (Malaysia Good Agricultural Practice) certificate to Ng for his Ifa greenhouse.

Accompanying Uggah were Utilities Minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom and Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development Assistant Ministers Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn and Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail.
