KUCHING: Sarawak’s golfers are off to a flying start at the SUKMA Golf Competition, leading in almost every category.
Local darling Mirabel Ting set the tone in the women’s individual event with a dazzling 3-under-par 69, giving her a commanding lead.
Hot on her heels are Sohniya Chandra (Johor), Ng Jing Xuen (Kuala Lumpur), and Wang Xin Yao (Perak), all tied for second at 1-over-par 73.
“It feels great to start strong, especially on home ground,” said Mirabel.
“I hope to maintain this momentum and bring the title home to Sarawak.”
The women’s team event also saw Sarawak in top form with a combined score of 229, thanks to Mirabel’s brilliance and solid contributions from Sharifah Aiysyah (77) and Abigail Kedung (+13).
Perak and Kuala Lumpur were joint second with 232.
On the men’s side, Mohammad Danial Nazari (Terengganu) and Sarawak’s own Anson Yeo shared the lead after carding identical 1-under-par 71 rounds.
Putera Haikal (Pahang) and Hariz Hezri (Perlis) were closed behind with even-par scores.
“It was a challenging day, but I’m thrilled to finish strong and represent Sarawak on top of the leaderboard,” said Anson.
“I’m excited to keep the momentum going!”
Selangor and Pahang were neck and neck in the men’s team event with a score of 225, while Sarawak was in third with 224.
The team’s strong performance was attributed to Anson Yeo (71), Joshua Lim (76), Cayden Kong (77), and Wesley Chai (87).
It’s worth noting that Kelantan and Negeri Sembilan were absent from this year’s competition.
Chief Technical Delegate Teoh Piek Kee was full of praise for the event’s management and the high standard of play.
“The course is in excellent condition and the organising team has done a fantastic job,” he said.
“We’re looking forward to another two exciting days of competition.”
The second round of the competition tees off tomorrow at 7.30am from both the 1st and 10th tees.
