KUCHING: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan on Wednesday saluted the repurposing of abandoned buildings, saying it augurs well for economic development.
He also lauded the concept of repurposing existing buildings rather than constructing new ones from scratch as a means of preserving architectural and historical heritage while reducing strain on resources.
In stating this Awang Tengah said urban planning plays a vital role in shaping cities and communities.
He was speaking at the launching of the refurbished Roxy Impiana Hotel here (Feb 7).
“This revitalisation project symbolises not only a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to promote tourism and create new economic opportunities but also harbours immense potential for the development and growth of our local community.
“The increased footfall generated by this revitalised enterprise will surely assist our local businesses, such as restaurants, stores, and numerous other services.
“Moreover, the reopening of this hotel demonstrates our unwavering commitment to promoting sustainable development practices,” he said.
As such, Awang Tengah who is Second Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development commended the developers, Tecktonic & Sons Holdings Sdn Bhd, for their foresight and dedication in collaborating on the initiative.
He expressed hope that their efforts would inspire other developers to follow suit.
“It takes a developer with foresight to see value in abandoned buildings in Kuching that are refurbished to regain their status as landmarks among the local community.
“I praise Tecktonic & Sons Holdings Sdn Bhd, the private developers and hoteliers that collaborated on this initiative.
“Your vision, enthusiasm, and dedication to this endeavour are extremely inspiring.
“We acknowledge that your knowledge, abilities, and passion have been instrumental in resurrecting this old hotel and converting it into a beacon of beauty and hospitality, and we hope that your effort is a good example to other developers,” he added.
