BALAI KARANGAN: Voters in the Sekayam region of West Kalimantan, Indonesia, showed great enthusiasm to fulfil their duty in the General Election (Pemilu) and Presidential Election (Pilpres) on Feb 14.
They started flocking to the Polling Stations (TPS) as early as 7am, right after they were opened to the public.
Sekayam Sub-district Head, Kosmas Yul, said the clear weather allowed approximately 29,000 voters to cast their votes across 118 TPS in the area.
Furthermore, he mentioned that based on their observations, along with the police and military, the electoral process proceeded smoothly.
“The enthusiasm of the community is indeed extraordinary; from 7am to 10am, many people came to vote at the TPS in Sekayam. Our hope is that this election will proceed peacefully and successfully.
“Hopefully, with this democratic celebration, our society will joyfully welcome new leaders and strive for more success and progress for Indonesia in the future,” he said.
Meanwhile, TPS Supervisor for Lintas Batas Village, Entikong, Mohd Nazri Musadad, attributed the voters’ enthusiasm to the efforts of the Polling Station Organising Group (KPPS) in distributing invitation letters to voters.
“The KPPS has issued invitation letters and has been going door-to-door to ensure voters come to the polling stations. I believe the enthusiasm for voting has been quite high since morning. It likely corresponds to the distributed invitation letters,” he said.
In this largest single-day election in the world, Indonesians will elect a new president and vice president, as well as members of parliament and legislators.
There are around 20,000 administrative positions nationwide, with approximately 205 million registered voters eligible to cast their votes.
Each voter is provided with five ballot papers to choose a presidential and vice-presidential pair, national, regional, and local legislators, as well as regional senators.
