KUCHING: Government support is imperative to ensure the growth of the palm oil industry in Sarawak in future, said Sarawak Oil Palm Plantation Owners Association (Soppoa).

In its press release on Monday (Nov 30), the association said the favourable crude palm oil (CPO) prices today was achieved because of its regular engagements with both the state and federal governments.

“It couldn’t have come a better time with rising crop production and favourable CPO prices of RM3000 to RM3300 per metric ton even amidst a pandemic.

“Regular engagements with related federal ministers, the chief minister and deputy chief ministers were also made to highlight unresolved issues with government agencies by giving proposals with valid justifications or working papers which bring benefits to the government, plantation operators and the public.

“In some cases, legislative matters on Soppoa appeals were even brought to a sitting Parliament by ministers for debates and resolved. This is greatly appreciated,” it said.

Soppoa highlighted that close partnerships with other plantation associations and stakeholders would ensure continued growth of the industry.

“Soppoa is also a council member of Sarawak Business Federation (SBF) which represents more than 80 percent of the businesses in Sarawak.

“This certainly will give the space for Soppa to have a voice in Sarawak business community and abroad.

“Collaborative efforts, especially on issues of low yields, peat soils, pollination, palm nutrition, mechanisation and other digital technologies to enhance the yields and resolve these issues apart from ongoing other negotiations and collaborations with local universities and institute of higher learning to pursue technology and knowledge advancements were held.

“Seminars, forums and training sessions were also held to update members on research and development advancements and commercial applications,” it added.

Celebrating its 12 years of formation, Soppoa said it would continue to ensure continued growth and success of the Sarawak palm oil industry.

“We will continue to gain momentum with more new members joining the fold to support the mission,” it added.
