KUCHING: The Sarawak government plans to develop Usun Apau in Ulu Baram, Miri.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said there is a waterfall in Usun Apau similar to the Niagara Falls in Canada.

“There is one area called Usun Apau that we have not developed. The waterfall there is beautiful, very nice, and very cooling.

“Hence, this is part of our programme in our long-term development up to the year 2030 under the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS 2030),” he said at the Association of Hotels (MAH) dinner here on Monday.

Usun Apau, gazetted as a national park in September 2005, is a volcanic plateau located at the head-waters of Rajang and Baram rivers, in the southern part of Miri Division.

The tallest waterfall in Sarawak is the Julan Waterfall in the Usun Apau National Park.

On another note, he said the state allocated funds to build infrastructure such as roads and bridges to provide better mobility for the people, of which it is also important for the tourism sector.

“If tourists want to enjoy Terubok in Sebuyau or Empurau in Kapit, they can ride on the coastal road.

“Last time we used to take an express boat, but now we can drive up to Kapit even up to Baleh because there is a road,” he said.

He added attractive bridges – cable-stayed bridges with installations of lights – are also being constructed in Bintulu and Batang Lupar.

“So this is the infrastructure that we are doing… to give that ‘umph’ feeling to the people so that people will come (to visit Sarawak),” he said.

Abang Johari said people are mesmerised when they see the iconic red bridge of San Francisco, and the same feeling applies when people visit the Satok Bridge, now lit with colourful lights.

“Besides that, we are also building a bridge crossing the Baram River to Marudi, then we are also building a road from Marudi up to Long Terawan and the road will pass outside Mulu because it is an UNESCO World Heritage area, and right up to Limbang where Gunung Buda is.

“Them from Limbang you can go to Brunei. So likewise, from the northern part of Miri, you can go to Limbang as the whole road will be constructed, hence that will be easy for tourists to enjoy the culture of Orang Ulu as well as to see the scenery in the rural area,” he said.
