Govt agencies urged to prepare for next phase of Bukit Assek Redevelopment Project

SIBU: Both state and federal government agencies here are urged to get ready for the implementation of the next phase of the Bukit Assek Redevelopment Project.

According to Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, the Sibu Cloudburst Masterplan Study, part of the project, has been completed.

Dr Sim, who is also the Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, said that the study comprises three stages.

“Stage one involved flood risk assessment, the cloudburst masterplan and design for Sibu city and integrated infrastructure (stage two), and stage three is the urban development masterplan for Bukit Assek,” he said in his Facebook post yesteday (July 31).

Dr Sim was seen attending a meeting with Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) at Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) meeting room at Wisma Sanyan here.

The Geographic Information System (GIS) data for the flood risk assessment study, he said, has also been completed.

“This includes soil investigation, topographical survey, survey of existing waterways and drains, bathymetry survey and river cross-sectioning and sounding, as well as tidal observation,” he added.

The completion of the study, makes only Sibu had GIS data of waterways and drains, allowing 3D simulation of a 100-year rainfall event and modeling.

Previously, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg had said that the Bukit Assek Redevelopment Plan will transform Sibu’s urban landscape.

“The project masterplan will be finalised in the first quarter of 2025 and the implementation on the restructuring and renewable of Bukit Assek will begin in 2026 and expected to be redeveloped in four phases over a period of 15 years,” he said.

Abang Johari said this during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration for Sibu Division here on April 13.

Also present were Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee; Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek and SMC deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley.
