KUCHING: Sixty-four babies entered the world after the stroke of midnight on Jan 1 at government hospitals across Sarawak.
State Health Department director Dr Jamilah Hashim said the New Year’s Day babies were delivered at government hospitals in the state between 12am and 5pm on Wednesday.
35 of the newborns were girls while the remaining were boys.
Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) recorded the highest number of New Year babies at 21, followed by Sibu Hospital (11) and Miri Hospital and Bintulu Hospital – delivered eight babies each.
Seven New Year babies were born at Sarikei Hospital, three each at Sri Aman Hospital and Lundu Hospital, while Kanowit Hospital, Marudi Hospital and Limbang Hospital each recorded the birth of one baby past midnight.
From those numbers, four pre-dawn babies were delivered at SGH in Kuching and 31-year-old Ching Ing Siaw’s baby boy was the first to be delivered at SGH at 1.14am.
