MUKAH: An old government quarters in Balingian here was razed to the ground in a wee hour fire today (Feb 4).

A spokesman from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firemen from Mukah station were deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call around 4.02am.

“On arrival, the firemen were told that 10 auxiliary firefighting team members or Pasukan Bomba Sukarela (PBS) from Balingian, had earlier extinguished the fire using a pump machine, a 200-foot hose, and water from a fire hydrant.

“The operations commander reported that the quarters, made out of non-permanent material, was beyond saving.

“However, no casualties were reported during the incident,” said the spokesperson.

Both the firemen and PBS members conducted an overhaul at the scene as they were told the old quarters had been abandoned for a long time.

The cause of the fire and the total loss of properties are still under investigation.
