THE government has started relocating and rebuilding schools that suffer from frequent flooding, slope failure, land issues and low enrolment.
According to Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn, there are 80 schools in the state that are exposed to frequent flooding, slope failure or possible erosion.
Following that, he stated that the state Education Department had designated 263 schools as low enrolment schools (SKM) that could be merged into 49 centralised schools.
“However, the relocation of these schools is only possible if the federal government provides sufficient funding.
“It is estimated that approximately RM2.4 billion will be required for flood-prone and slope failure schools, and RM1.2 billion will be needed to relocate and rebuild SKM schools.
“Apart from funding, we also need full support from the local communities,” he said during his ministerial winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today.
