KUCHING: The Sarawak government will look into a request of the Sarawak Heritage Society (SHS) to preserve the building of the former Nurses Quarters located opposite the Sarawak General Hospital near the junction of Jalan Crookshank and Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg acknowledged that he has received a letter from the society, in which they have sought urgent intervention to halt the demolition of the old buildings.

“We will look into it. Because of the Nurses’ Home, I do not know in terms of the building’s heritage value.

“If it is like the post office or police station here, it has been declared as heritage sites, including Chung Hua Middle School No 4 at Jalan Haji Taha.

“For the Nurses’ Home, it is between Bampfylde Road and the hospital. It could has historical value as the buildings were used to train nurses,” he said after officiating at the launch of Tun Openg: Sarawak First Governor Biography at Hikmah Exchange Event Centre here on Sunday.
