KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Backbenchers Club have slammed Sarawak Democratic Action Party chairman Chong Chieng Jen for his recent remarks.

“Chong, in his now too often outbursts against the Sarawak government, has ignored the facts to rally his support base to create a negative perception of the state-federal relationship between GPS and Perikatan Nasional.

“In his choice of words to use ‘king beggar’, we would like to remind him that it was him, in fact, who begged GPS to support Pakatan Harapan (PH) to keep them in power in the political turmoil on Feb 29, 2020,” they said on Monday (March 29).

“And now, to say that we are beggars, we would like to ask him (Chong) this, what does this make you?”

For all of Chong’s efforts to spin the issues of the Batang Lupar Bridge project and the use of the word ‘Allah’, GPS Backbenchers Club said all this could and should have been resolved during PH’s time as the federal government.

On the lowering of the voting age to 18 years old (Undi18) which was passed in Parliament in July 2019, they asked Chong why the PH government did not see it through to its implementation immediately.

“Why wasn’t the Election Commission given the resources needed to make sure of such there and then?

Meanwhile, Chong, who is also the Stampin MP, in a live session on Facebook on Sunday (March 28), had pointed out that GPS’ position in matters such as the Covid-19 immunisation programme, the Batang Lupar Bridge project, the use of the word ‘Allah’ and Undi 18 had lowered their status as a kingmaker.
