BETONG: Voters in the parliamentary seat of Betong have been the staunchest supporters of the government for the past over 40 years.
Former deputy chief minister Tan Sri Alfred Jabu hoped the status quo will remain in the 15th general election (GE15).
He was speaking during the miring ceremony for the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) candidate for Betong Dr Richard Rapu at Dr Richard’s longhouse in Danau here, yesterday (Nov 4).
Jabu said the 59-year-old veterinarian by training is among the new crop of leaders being groomed.
“Let us all go out in full force to support him. In the next two weeks after the nomination, let us all work very hard and be united to ensure he wins with a big majority.
“Then in the coming five years, he will be able to give us his service as a representative of the GPS government,” he said, adding that the miring ceremony was led by Temenggong Richard Mulok and other community leaders to to bless Richard and help him win in the upcoming election.
On another matter, Jabu stated that currently, GPS is the strongest, united and relevant political platform for Sarawakians.
It would therefore be in the interest of Sarawakians if the rakyat support all the 31 GPS candidates.
“GPS now is already very strong and could be made even more stronger when most if not all of its candidates win the election.
“Thus, it is our duty to strengthen GPS,” he said.
Following this, Jabu revealed that the Layar, Bukit Saban, and Saribas constituencies had each been allocated a development budget of RM200 million under the newly formed Betong Division Development Agency ( BDDA).
“A win for Dr Richard will mean all its development projects and programmes could proceed smoothly,” he said.
Last night (Nov 3) a similar ceremony for Dr Richard was held at Jabu’s longhouse in Gensurai, near here.
It was attended by among others Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah, former Betong MP Datuk Robert Lawson Chuat and Layar assemblyman Datuk Gerald Rentap.
