KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) can be an important coalition partner and play an important role in the federal government.
Political analyst Dr Gregory Hii of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) who said this added that GPS as a coalition partner would also be in a position to ensure Sarawak interests including previous demands are met.
“This current situation presents a good opportunity,” he said, adding, “let Sarawak at the federal level help our country be an Asean tiger again.”
Hii said with honest, knowledgeable, resourceful, trustworthy and well-balanced cabinet members, Malaysia has a good chance to succeed.
Meanwhile, another political analyst, Dr Novel Lyndon of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) said since there is no party with enough seats to form the government, he expects the eventual coalition will be ethnocentric and Bumiputera/Malay centric.
“Therefore, the coalition will be Perikatan Nasional (PN)+GPS+Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS)+Barisan Nasional (BN),” he predicted.
In the 15th general election (GE15) Pakatan Harapan (PH) won 82 seats. PN – 73 seats and BN- 30 seats.
GPS won 22 seats, improving from the 18 it held in the last parliamentary term.
